Effective, But Often Forgotten Truths About Supervisory Skills
Hiring the best and the brightest makes sense for a company that wants to grow exponentially. But have we considered the possibility of creating the best and brightest out of our current pool of employees?
It is not a secret that a company’s growth depends largely on how employees work; basic economics dictates that any growth in average revenue per employee is helpful in driving a company’s push to expand its earnings. This ranges from how managers supervise their pack to how those from the ranks do their tasks in an efficient and effective manner.
Effective Leadership
Employees today are not entirely unlike those from the past. They still want to see their supervisors not as their bosses, but as their leaders. This brings to mind how servant leadership helps drive growth into employee development.
Team leaders must function as a person, first and foremost, in order to get their teammates’ ears and hearts. This means that they should be mindful of their employee’s career growth, personal wellness, and stability. And yet, they have to remain tough to earn respect.
Building the Team
Majority or 75 percent of employees in the Philippines today, based on latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, fall under the age group of millennials. They demand collaboration and openness to function well, and thus leaders must adapt to this.
Successful companies today, particularly startups, have a collaborative and open management style. Leaders work with the team, instead of having their own office. This gives employees a sense of familial connection that helps generate productivity.
Let’s take, for example, Grab Philippines and PayMaya. Both are known leaders in the ride-hailing and e-payment industries, and yet their leaders work in the same space as their subordinates.
But while a team functions as a group, it is made up of different individuals. While a team has a common goal, team members have different views. Some may be linear (those who need a step-by-step list of instruction) or global (those who only need the general idea to function well) in their ways of thinking. Being patient with instruction, providing the necessary support, lending them your ears, and helping them develop their character and career will help the team function better.
This creates a culture of efficiency and effectiveness. Having a small but efficient team is better than having a large but unproductive team. This results in better outputs and more agile work processes, which help drive growth into the company’s revenues.
Keeping the Team
But once a a team of dependable and productive employees has been created, the challenge of keeping it remains.
Making employees feel important and wanted — not needed — is vital to employee retention. More often than not, keeping the best and the brightest employees boils down to how leaders manage and supervise them. It is imperative then for the human resources department of companies to look into developing quality supervisors, equipping them with the necessary skills needed to help employees grow.
Respectable, relatable, and approachable supervisors and managers are the type of leaders which team members look up to. Cliche as it may sound, leaders must be role models to their team in order to boost their morale and confidence in the company they are working for.
