How to Look Confident Even If You’re Not

Confidence is essential in business, relationships, and day-to-day life. It’ll get you places, introduce you to new and interesting people, and open you up to opportunities you never would’ve come across had you stood in a corner and kept to yourself.

At the root of it all, confidence is about self-assurance, knowing oneself, and being unafraid to open up yourself to others. While the ideal way for that to happen is through constant practice and repetition, there are some things you can do to project it. In time, as you fake it, you’ll become it.

1. Pick a role model

We all have someone we admire for specific characteristics: a friend for his sense of humor, a colleague for her wit, or a celebrity for his sense of style. In the same way, we all know someone who has the confidence and charisma that attracts everyone. Your task now is to be like him or her. What are the mannerisms that make him seem confident? Does he stand tall? Does she speak clearly? Is he always genuinely interested in what people have to say? Does she smile a lot? Identify these “confident” characteristics and incorporate them into your own. Never mind if it feels awkward. Just as novice artists look to the artworks of masters as inspiration for their own, finding your own confidence needs an example to start you off as well.

2. Look well, act well

Everyone has a go-to item of clothing or accessory that when worn instantly makes him stand taller or take more confident strides. Be it a pair of brown leather Oxfords and a crisp white shirt combo or a favorite dress and pair of heels, when you look good, you begin to feel good. And when you feel good, you become more sure of yourself and more mindful of your actions. It doesn’t have to be a new wardrobe. Find something that fits you well and doesn’t make you slouch. While you’re at it, get a new haircut, start an exercise regimen, and be conscious of your posture. You’ll feel more confident already.

3. Maintain eye contact

When talking to someone, maintaining strong eye contact immediately makes you come off as confident and sure of yourself. Look at the person straight in the eye to show that you’re interested. Ask him questions, listen to his response, and reply appropriately. Small talk is awkward and everyone hates it. But more than talking about the weather, if done right, small talk might even get you a new business contact or even a friend. More importantly, it’ll give you more confidence to relate with anyone.

4. Put yourself out there

Once in a while, force yourself to step out of your comfort zone. You don’t have to jump off a cliff or run a marathon. It’s about taking every opportunity to put yourself in new and unknown situations, forcing yourself to do something for the first time. Volunteer to do a task, accept a leadership position, enroll in an enrichment course, or host a dinner.

Practice makes perfect. With these moves, you might just find yourself with a smile in your face and a spring in your steps, ready to face any challenge that life throws at you with confidence.
